Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Therapy in Langley

At State of Mind Counselling, we understand how disruptive and isolating OCD can feel.

We specialize in the treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and our dedicated therapists combine advanced training in Exposure and Response Preventions (ERP) with customized therapy options just for you.

Understanding Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

OCD is a mental health condition that often involves unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviours or rituals (compulsions) performed to help reduce anxiety or prevent an unwanted outcome.

These intrusive thoughts and rituals can feel overwhelming and uncontrollable, consuming time and energy while creating barriers to daily life, relationships and overall well-being.

While each person’s experience of OCD varies, common symptoms include:

  • Persistent, intrusive thoughts
  • Repetitive behaviours or rituals (ie. rechecking things and/or seeking reassurance from yourself or others because you can not be certain that you did or did not do something wrong or forgot to do something, having to do a behaviour in an exact order or an exact number of times, saying things over and over in your mind)
  • If the activities are not performed, anxiety or distress may follow
  • Avoidance of places or situations that may be triggers

OCD is more common than people realize, but with the right treatment, it can be much more manageable.

Our Approach to OCD Therapy

We offer therapy for OCD at our Langley counselling clinic and through online sessions. Treatment is based on best-practices and collaboration with each client to ensure the best outcomes.

We offer both personalized one-on-one therapy sessions and thoughtfully crafted group sessions designed to build community and reduce the stigma around OCD. These supportive group offerings provide a safe space for connection, shared insight and encouragement, reminding clients that they are not alone in their journey. Whether you’re taking your first step toward healing or looking for continued support, our approach is tailored to meet you exactly where you are in your process.

FAQs

What is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy and how does it work?

ERP is an evidence-based therapy for treating OCD and is a form of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) that works by gently exposing a person to their triggers while they work to resist performing their compulsions or rituals (response prevention). This can help break the established cycles of obsession and compulsion by retraining the brain to tolerate the anxiety and not fear the unlikely outcomes.

What can I expect during my first counselling session?

In your first session, in addition to getting to know one another, we will complete a comprehensive screening in order to assess your symptoms.  Once the screening is complete, and we have a better understanding of your symptoms and experiences, we will develop an individualized treatment plan which we will work closely together on moving forward.

How long does a typical program typically last?

Each individual is unique and so are their needs. Progress depends on the individual but a typical treatment plan can last from several months to a year, with regular sessions to assess progress and adjust treatments, as needed.
