Therapeutic Approaches and
Treatment Methods

Therapy can take many forms, from creative expression and mindfulness to evidence-based treatments. Each approach offers its own way of helping people heal, grow and connect more with themselves and with others.

Our team draws from a wide range of therapeutic methods to tailor care for each individual. Whether you’re curious about the differences in techniques or you want to try something new for your healing journey, this page offers a brief overview of some of the approaches our therapists use in our practice.

Art
Therapy

Art therapy combines creative expression and psychotherapy to support healing and self-discovery. Through the use of artistic materials, individuals can explore thoughts and emotions that might otherwise be difficult to express through words alone.

Behaviour
Therapy

Our counsellors provide behaviour therapy tailored to neurodivergent individuals, helping to build practical coping strategies, improve daily functioning and promote positive behavioural changes.

Child-Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT)

CPRT is a play-based program for young children experiencing emotional, social or attachment challenges. It focuses on strengthening the parent-child bond as the foundation for emotional wellness.

Circle of
Security (COS)

The Circle of Security program helps parents and caregivers understand and respond to a child’s emotional needs. It promotes secure attachment by fostering reflection, empathy and connection in the caregiver-child relationship.

Cognitive Behaviour
Therapy (CBT)

CBT helps identify and change unhelpful thinking and behaviour patterns. It is effective for a wide range of challenges including anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use and relationship difficulties.

Dialectical Behaviour
Therapy (DBT)

DBT integrates mindfulness and CBT principles to help regulate emotions, manage distress and improve relationships. It supports individuals in moving toward greater stability and emotional balance.

Dyadic
Therapy

Dyadic therapy works with both parent and infant or young child together, supporting their relationship and addressing the needs of both. It helps promote healthy attachment, communication and emotional development.

Emotion-Focused Family
Therapy (EFFT)

EFFT aims to restore connection and strengthen emotional resilience within family relationships. It focuses on repairing emotional bonds and building secure, responsive caregiving patterns.

Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy (ERP)

ERP is a CBT-based therapy proven effective for OCD and anxiety disorders. It helps individuals gradually face feared situations while resisting compulsive behaviours, leading to reduced anxiety over time.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR helps process and reduce the emotional impact of traumatic memories through guided bilateral stimulation (often eye movements). This approach supports healing and decreases distress associated with past trauma.

Gottman Couples
Method

The Gottman Method offers structured, evidence-based tools for improving communication, resolving conflict and enhancing intimacy in relationships.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy uses guided relaxation to access the subconscious mind, helping individuals explore difficult memories, manage pain, or shift patterns of thought and behaviour.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the practice of focusing awareness on the present moment with openness and acceptance. It promotes calm, emotional regulation and a deeper sense of connection with oneself and others.

Narrative
Therapy

Narrative therapy views individuals as the authors of their own stories. It helps separate people from their problems, empowering them to reframe their experiences and identify their strengths.

Perinatal Mental
Health Support

Perinatal mental health care focuses on the emotional well-being of pregnant and postpartum women. Support may address anxiety, depression, birth trauma and adjustment challenges.

Person-Centred
Therapy

Person-centred therapy emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard and self-directed growth. It empowers individuals to explore their own experiences in a supportive, non-judgmental environment.

Play
Therapy

Play therapy provides children with a safe, age-appropriate way to express thoughts and feelings. Through play, children process emotions, develop coping skills and build confidence.

Sand Tray
Therapy

Sand tray therapy uses sand, water and miniature objects to help individuals express and explore inner experiences symbolically. It can promote insight and emotional healing through creative expression.

Solution-Focused
Therapy

Solution-focused therapy emphasizes strengths, goals and future possibilities rather than dwelling on past problems. It helps individuals identify practical steps toward meaningful change.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT)

TF-CBT integrates trauma processing with CBT techniques to support individuals affected by early or acute trauma. It helps build safety, regulation and resilience.

Watch, Wait &
Wonder (WWW)

WWW is a child-led therapeutic approach using free play to enhance caregiver sensitivity and responsiveness. It supports attachment, emotional regulation and self-awareness for both child and parent.

Each of these therapy methods can play a role in supporting emotional health and personal growth. To learn more about how these approaches integrate into our work, visit our Services or Specializations pages or contact our Langley clinic to discuss which methods may best support your needs.
